Some news.
First, Jim Redman, six times world champion, has agreed to become our Honorary President.
His name will appear at the bottom of our letterhead from now on.
We will also change our HMG logo in the near future to reflect Jim’s position by taking out John Surtees, and putting Jim in his place.
Second.
We will be having caps made with the Historic Motorcycle Group name on the front.
Green caps with gold lettering.
A mention of M.S.A. on the cap, which is Motorsport South Africa, who gave us a donation, will also appear.
By the time you read this, our restricted licenses will be sorted out. You can obtain yours (if you need one) at Kyalami at our next meeting. R21.00 per license per annum
Grid placements.
We have decided to allocate the twelve faster riders, positions at the front of the grid.
It will be row allocation, not actual position across the line.
The remaining riders can slot in behind where they feel comfortable.
As riders improve and become faster, or faster riders become slower, you will be moved closer to the front or back depending on your ability.
Was a money saving offer.
Trinity Leathers are still recommended by HMG as being the best company making leathers.
Price subject to negotiation, however.
I have obtained a made to measure set from Trinity. Fabulous fit, and the armour in the right places.
It is now official.
Our next demonstration will be at Kyalami on the 17th July 2004.
The day commemorates the classic motor vehicles of yesteryear.
Practise will be 5 to 6 laps in the morning and two 6-lap events.
So, early Saturday morning. Drive into the track up to the pits. From there Charmaine will take your entry monies and direct you to HMG’s location.
You will be given 4 tickets, so invite some friends along.
More details will follow to those who accept this invitation.
As a recipient of this newsletter you are invited to participate.
Please confirm your acceptance with Charmaine, so we can inform the organisers.
Peter Lindenberg is interested in having us back again at GosforthPark.
Provisional date is 4th September 2004.
There have been some changes to Gosforth, with a Kink just before the banked oval as you come off the back straight
So coming onto the main straight off the banking is not so daunting as it was initially.
Also, Peter DuToit of Swartkops is so happy with the enthusiastic response from the public when we demonstrate, he is asking us to come and ride again soon.
I didn’t see it, (to busy watching the start flag) but I was told the pit lane was packed with people trying to get to the wall to take pictures.
Will keep you informed on actual dates.
Paddock apparel
We have a second quantity of LEXAR golf shirts, which are selling.
Once they are gone, there will be no more, unless the sponsor signs up for another year.
So if you want a piece of HMG history, get a shirt before they’re all gone.
The quality is 100%. Everyone at Swartkops on the David Piper Day acknowledged the professionalism of the H.M.G.
Unfortunately the cost cannot be borne by H.M.G. as the original sponsorship monies have all but dried up, most sponsorship monies going on previous promotional items for LEXAR.
The purchase price is R150.00 per golf shirt. This is the manufacturers cost. No monies will be made on the sale of these shirts.
Please speak to Charmaine, if you wish to purchase one. Contact phone 011 314-2427.
If you do have a LEXAR golf shirt, it’s important to wear it when at official race meetings.
Whilst on sponsorship issue.
We have 6-months to go before the present sponsor’s 12 months are up.
They may renew their sponsorship with us, however if you know of a company who wishes to be involved with the HMG, please give them our contact number, so we can start talking to them. We do not want to wait until the last minute.
Allowing another rider to use your machine.
On official H.M.G. practice days, as long as the ‘other’ rider has paid his entry fee and signed the indemnity form, you may invite a friend along to experience the thrill of riding on a racetrack, using your machine.
Who knows, he / she may become a future H.M.G. rider?
We require that the committee be informed beforehand however, just to keep our records straight.
When it comes to H.M.G. demonstrations, only the owner or designated rider of the machine who appears on the program may ride in the demonstration event. This is a requirement from Motorsports SA, and the restricted license requirement.
Growing all the time.
We have over 49 riders participating in events now, with more applicants applying to join.
Should you know of a person wishing to take part in H.M.G. events, he / she must make an application in writing to the above box number.
We have identified two beautifully prepared full race machines that may be entering in the future. A 250cc water-cooled Bultaco and a 350cc Yamaha.
Secondhand apparel.
Roy Reaney has a one-piece set of racing leathers, made by Lewis of London I believe.
The leathers should fit a person of 1.7 to 1.8 metres in height, they have shrunk around the waist so he tells me, so he’s selling them. Wants R500.00. No body armour! Men were men in those days.
Contact cellphone is 082 334-2585.
Improving your riding skills.
Most of us haven’t been on the Kyalami track, ever. Some haven’t been to Kyalami, full stop.
My last track time was many moons ago.
I and three or four other HMG riders intend to attend the next track day on the 31st May, where we will learn theory and practical application of riding quickly and safely using our own bikes.
It’s a full day, plenty of sessions on the track and racing instructors assisting you and following you throughout the day.
Get there for 7am, first out is at 9.00am. Finishes at 4pm.
John Thornton went on the last one and he raved about it.
How much?
It’s R490.00.
Fancy to come along? Phone 011 793-4255, Speak to Cindy or Lena.
This is on a Monday, so put in for leave now!
Racing fuel.
A company called Air Con-Nected Lubricants in Randburg. Contact Soulby Jackson on 011 793-5446.
He sells leaded racing fuel, 20 litre cans for R120.00.
He had 50 X 20 litre drums left on Friday, 28 May 2004. Get some as a back-up as Shell do not have stock.
P.S. If you have an email address, it will make it so much easier to get the newsletters to you, so if this came by fax and you have an email, please forward the info to Charmaine.
That’s about it, happy and safe riding.
Mike
