Wednesday 16 June is a holiday, so we reasoned that most competitors would have taken at least the Friday off, so one more day, (the Thursday) would allow them to make a decent holiday out of the trip.

Zwartkops

Most of these events are in conjunction with classic / historic car events.
At Zwartkops we will get a practise and two events. The entry fee is fixed at R250.00 per Zkops event for the whole year.

No chance of riding in the regional’s anymore because of the number of classes.

Practises we will fit in prior to events occurring.

Committee duties.
Derek will look after the first-aid kit, handout advertising materials and the white board with event times on it.
Etienne will look after one set of rollers and member motivation.
Mike will look after the other set of rollers.
Terry will handle new member applications and issue numbers for bikes, but only once bike is approved. Also stickers for members.
Trevor will scrutineer new and existing bikes.
John and Terry will handle events and practises.
Penny will do the administrative work.

Midvaal has a new owner.
An Italian, we spoke to him and things sound good.
Dropped HMG entry fees back to R200.00. For semi-official outings.

And we understand he intends to do the place up a bit and spend some money.
Small hotel type establishment will be built up above the restaurant. Great for up-country riders wanting to get maximum track time and want to stay over.
Existing pits will be demolished as will the tower. We will know beforehand when the pits are being broken down and the venue closed for re-building.

We had a reasonable turn-out from HMG Saturday last, about 10 of us but I would have expected more?
Ian Groat was there testing his machines as well as the guys who will be riding them.
Nice day, hot but humid.

Phakisa is fixed so the encroachment of the nationals into regional events should be less.
The new ladies class for this year is being pumped big time in the bike press as is another beginner’s class.

Function.
Zwartkops track.  Braai starts around 5-6pm onwards. 28th January 2010.

A couple of members are bring and braai but we are suggesting getting a set braai and goodies from Zwartkops Catering. Please do as we have put the proverbial .… on the block promising we will pay for the food.

The best offer which is recommended is a combined braai pack of a chop, boerewors, chicken kebab, mielie pap, sous, green salads, coleslaw and rolls. Dessert is Cassata ice-cream for R89.00. Plates and utensils they provide and they cook for you and have tables with real cloth tablecloths.
Local beers are 10bucks.

We really want you to put in a bit of effort and come and meet our overseas guests, brush shoulders with the Isle of Man TT winners also with local heroes and dignitaries.
Talk with ex world Champions and have your picture taken by all and sundry and become a legend in your own mind!
There’s no time during the Saturday or Sunday to chew the cud a bit, so this is the place to make new friends.

Well it’s about time to gear up and get ready.

Nice spit and polish and comb your hair. Practice doing joined up words just in case you are asked to give a written report on your machine by an overseas journalist?
If you have a HMG bib, please bring along.

Please keep the following in memory, on paper or whatever.

  • Bring your membership card.
  • In the competitors queue by 6am to get in and collect your tickets.
  • Park at the back of the HMG pits. Off-load then move your vehicle to behind the lock-up garages.
  • Do all the pleasantries then get the chair and tools out next to the bike.
  • Realise you left the important bits behind and hope somebody has a spare set of ‘specials’ for you?
  • Check tyre pressures.
  • Top up the petrol-tank.
  • Clean your visor.
  • Sit back and watch the late-comers rushing around like chickens with no heads, and smile.

Before you can ride, the following must be done and in this order.
    1. Go to the tower with your membership card, fill in Zwartkops indemnity form and get your neck stamped. Pick up your commemorative badge.
    2. Go to Penny and fill in our forms and pay Penny R250.00.
    3. Make sure Trevor or Trevor’s stand-in has scrutineered your bike and you have the sticker to prove it.

“Bet it was walking to the canteen?”
“Speak up, what was that son?”

The committee needs a gofer to take movies of the event.

There are 40 plus ex South African champions taking part on some unique machines, many not seen for many years.

And of course Jim Redman will be there signing autographs, chatting with old and new friends and of course riding in as many events as he can.

I am sure as he did last year, will be in Cape Town and now also East London.

Saturday it’s the overseas riders, together with ex South African championship riders and a small selection from HMG.
Saturday this is a David Piper car and bike event.
All Bikes are down under the Bridgestone roof on Saturday.

Tickets for Saturday.
Mike will be there at the gate from 6.30am to 7.30am to give tickets to invited guests.
If you were invited and arrive late, make a plan. Mike 082 457-0248.

Tickets for Sunday.
Derek and or Etienne will be at the gate from 6.00am to 7am. No later.
If you have a problem, please call Derek or Etienne on 083 408 7525 or 082 558 8774 and let them know.

We are asking a favour from you.
A couple of our paid up members who through injury can’t ride but want to come, we would like to give them a ticket or two?

The classic club of which many of us are also members is making the event an official ride out and enjoy the day with us. There will be 20 of them.

To this end we believe we should help them if we can. Building bridges and whatever?

Derek will ask you if you have spare tickets?
If you have, please give them to Derek rather than throw them away so he can hand over to HMG and Pierre of the CMC and his riders.

Who is going to do the other events?
There are a few already confirmed.
Do you need a member to assist you in paying towards petrol?
Do you need a member who is going and has a two or three bike trailer?
Would you like to go but it’s too far to drive all by yourself?

Don’t be shy, give us a call and we will do our best to put you in touch with members who are going and willing to help.
Rules and regs for Cape Town and East London available from me, if you are going?

Finally,
I am being asked ‘Can I get there Saturday afternoon and sleep over?”
‘Can I get in Saturday with my bike and leave it there and arrive Sunday?”

I can honestly tell you, I don’t know?
Call me closer to the time and I might have an answer?
My gut feel says you are going to battle to get in without a ticket, especially towing a trailer and bike!

I’m also being asked questions that have been in the newsletters more than once.
If members don’t read, then if things turn awkward then they only have themselves to blame.

Into fibre-glassing again.
The Ducati’s petrol-tank seems to have developed a couple of small bubbles under the paint?
So rather be ready if something happens than to get in a panic and try and cram a month’s work into a couple of days.

So I spent quality time over Xmas cutting the bottom out of the scrap tank that came with the bike originally and proceeded to do repairs.

It had a split about 200mm long, along the top upper side edge and the glass was paper thin in this section. A previous owner took off most of the original paint but must have used a very rough file / grinder and left millions of gouges everywhere!
Found a lot of stress cracks visible from the inside where something came together with various parts of the tank in the past. One particular stress is where the family jewels would impact if the bike came to a sudden stop. It makes my eyes water just to think about it?

A LOT of sanding to get the finish acceptable, but it will still need a filler coat sprayed on and rubbed back.

But after I removed all the ‘additional’ fiberglass resin poured in by a person unknown in the past to fix these stress cracks or whatever, which by the way didn’t adhere to the original moulding, I could see the original moulding hadn’t been attacked by the petrol of the seventies and eighties.
It’s a strange original mixture because I cannot see any fibre-glass strands? The inside is as smooth as the outside, but it’s definitely got the smell and itch of fibre-glass resin when you grind it!

I decided to change my plans and instead of making a good tank from the crap one, I’m going to spend some money and make a master mould and from that, make a few spare tanks.

One thing leads to another and I now have two halves about ready for making moulds from.

Anybody want to improve the look of their bike 100 fold by fitting a Ducati petrol-tank?

Sorry, just asking!!!

New member.

Hasn’t joined as an active member but is looking for a bike to purchase and come and join us.
If anybody has or knows of a bike for sale, nothing spectacular as James hasn’t done this before.
He has a Blade and a couple of Hardly Dangerous bikes and has been riding for yonks.
Looking for a 500 single or Honda in the 500cc Range.

A bit of fun.
Sipho's Granddad was reminiscing about the good old days...

"When I were a boy, my mother would send me down to the corner shop with a Rand, and I'd come back with 5kg of potatoes, two loaves of bread, three pints of milk, 1kg of cheese, a packet of tea, and half a dozen eggs."

"You can't do that now..... Too many security cameras."
